How to play piano – The three steps to learning how to play piano.

DO you want to learn how to play the piano? Well most people when starting out are very confused on exactly how to get started when learning the piano. When looking at all those keys it can be very confusing and hard to understand. But really its not hard at all, did you know that with all of those keys there is only 7 of them that really matter to you at any given time. Now if you break it down to just seven of the keys on the piano then its really not that hard at all. Because those seven just repeat themselves over and over on the whole piano.

There are what I would call three steps to knowing how to play the piano, and when you hear someone play a song then they are using these three steps And the three steps to any kind of music on the piano are these.

Scales form chords, Chords form chord progressions, and chord progressions form songs. So within every song you have those three simple aspects that are making up that song.

So what should you be learning if you want to learn to play piano, well first you have to build from the ground up. Lets talk about scales.

Scales are the most simple part of learning to play the piano to me. That is basically where the 7 notes I was talking about are explained. Take the note that is a C, everyone has heard the C scale played im sure it’s the scale with all white notes in it, It is made up of C D E F G A B C. So if you are counting all those notes in the C scale then you would see it is seven notes. And its not that once you get more advanced you cant use more then just these notes to form your chords off of. But in theory you need to have a clear understanding of the seven notes in a scale because those are the notes that are relevant to the scale you are playing in and that will teach you when, and why you are allowed to get outside the box from time to time.

So why are you only concerned about those seven notes? Because when you are playing a song the seven notes in the scale you are playing the song in are the only notes that you are going to be using, In your right hand and your left. So this is the first thing you should be learning on the piano is the formula for how a scale is formed, and that formula is very simple to learn.

Ok from scales you have just seven notes that you need to worry about when you decide what key you are playing in, or which scale you are using. So you take those seven notes and you are going to learn chords that you will play off of each note. This is the second building block, scales are the foundation, now we are building chords based off of every note in the scale. So if you are in the C scale you will learn a chord off the C the D, E, F,G,A and B. And when you learn these chords you will notice that off of each note in the scale you will be using a certain chord either major or minor or diminished. And those chords will be made up of only those notes in the scale. So there is a easy to remember formula of how to remember what kind of chord is off of each note in a scale.

So you should learn how to form Major, Minor, and Diminished chords and get them down very well. You have to have this down pat and in time with practice you will get it. Because when you are playing a chord off of each of the seven notes you will be either playing a major, minor or diminished chord. Based off of what type of chord is relevant to the scale you are playing in.

Like for example if you are playing a chord off of C in the C scale. That is the 1st note of that scale so its number is 1. And if you know how to form a C major chord you will know its C E and G. And its relevant to the scale because all the notes in that chord is in the scale. So just real quick the 1st tone is a major 2nd is minor, 3rd is minor, 4th is major, 5th is major, 6th is minor, and 7th is diminished. Se because like the 2nd note in the scale if its D then a D major would be D Gb and A. Well the Gb is not in the scale of C so the D major cant be used. But if you take a D minor which is D F and A then all those notes are in the scale so its relevant to the scale. And that’s why each tone is a different kind of chord but after you get this memorized you will have it down in every scale. The second note in every scale will always be minor and the rest will be the same also.

So after you know your chords and how to form them, and what kind of chord you should be using off of each note in the scale , Then you move to chord progressions. And what Is a chord progression? All it is is the movement from one chord to another. And that movement moves from each note of the scale and it’s the chord that you will be using off of each note of the scale. Like if you were playing a song and the chords moved from the 1 chord to the 4 chord. Well if you were in the scale of C then it would be a C major chord moving to the F chord. That is a chord progression when the chords move from one to another.

And the simple thing about this is that after you learn the most common chord progressions. Then you will notice that you are just repeating the same progressions over and over again in every song. Like for example a common chord progression is the 6th to the 2, to the 5, back to the 1. That’s a 6, 2, 5, 1 chord progression. And that same patter is used in many many many songs. Like form instants amazing grace, its used and most all old hymn songs. So after you learn chord progressions then where do you go from there?

Well you are playing songs to there fullest not. If you want to learn to play piano you must learn these three things. And these are the things you need to be practicing. Once you learn scales practice until you get every scale on the piano down pat. Same with chords learn every kind of chord, then from there you will be moving those chords one to another, which is called chord progressions and you will be playing any song you want to on the piano.
